Top Free Software for Designing Flyers and Leaflets

We are often asked by customers wanting to have a go at their own designs about what software they can use. Welcome to our DIY Design Tips series, where we help Hull businesses create stunning promotional materials using free software and online resources.

Designing your own flyers and leaflets can be cost-effective and rewarding. But dont forget, we are always here to help, if you need it. Here are some top free software options that can help you create professional-looking designs.

• Canva: Very easy to use design website to includes the magic of AI to help you create impressive designs. It includes lots of templates and images for you to use and even has options to add bleed, allowing you to create a file you can go straight to print with. Perfect for all levels of users. There is a paid for version that includes even more options but for many, the free version is more than enough.  https://www.canva.com/

• GIMP: A powerful open-source image editor, often considered a free alternative to Photoshop. If you need to edit images for you artwork, this is the one you should be looking at. Like photoshop it has a resonably steep learning curve but there are lots of tutorials on youtube on how to do the basics. It can even be made to look like photoshop with various plugins and tweaks to its interface. https://www.gimp.org/

• Inkscape: A free vector graphics editor perfect for creating scalable designs. Very similar to Illustrator in both look and use. Great for logo work and anything you might require to be scaled up such as banners. Outputs SVG files amongst others than can be opened in illustrator as well. https://inkscape.org/cs/

• Scribus: An alternative to Indesign but free of charge. It might not have the complete level of depth that indesign has but for the vast majority of peoples need this will cover more than they need. https://www.scribus.net/
